Our Process: Salvaged Lumber, Such as Reclaimed Barn Wood, Becomes High Quality Flooring

The Woods Company maintains a 90,000-square-foot manufacturing facility under roof on more than four acres in south-central Pennsylvania. The entire production process is controlled by us at this one location. Salvaged lumber, including reclaimed barn wood, is brought to our facility—either by our own dismantling crew or from the many other salvagers we deal with—to be sorted, tallied, and inventoried. The lumber is de-nailed, metal detected, graded, and kiln dried by our team.

Kiln Drying

Utilizing proper drying techniques is a critical first step in producing stable, high-quality reclaimed flooring products. Very few suppliers offer the extensive drying process that we do. We designed and built our high-temperature dry kiln specifically to dry old lumber, such as reclaimed barn wood. We are able to dry more than 120,000-bf per month. In addition to the normal requirements of reducing moisture content to the six to eight-percent range, our lumber, including reclaimed barn wood, is sterilized to kill any insect infestation that may be present.

Quality Milling

Kiln-dried lumber, including reclaimed barn wood, is taken to our mill area where we pre-surface, laser rip, and defect trim every board. This process yields a flooring “blank” that has been quality inspected at eight separate points. These blanks are then run through our precision moulder/matcher, producing plank flooring that is dimensionally accurate and of superior finish quality

Extensive Inventory

All material that is not slated for flooring orders is stored by species, grade, and width. We maintain an extensive inventory of moulder-ready blanks so that we are able to produce most orders in a timely manner.
